How will the gender balance directive shape the future of business?

New European regulations are encouraging greater representation of women in leadership, and at Women’s Weekend, inspiring leaders like Ana Kreacic will demonstrate how diversity fosters innovation and better business decisions.

A European directive has come into effect, bringing changes to the governance structures of large corporations and paving the way for a more equal and progressive business environment. Its goal is to increase the representation of women on executive and supervisory boards, thereby promoting more diverse and higher-quality decision-making.

What does the directive bring?

Companies listed on the Zagreb Stock Exchange must ensure by June 2026 that at least 40% of board members are women or that 33% of all director positions are held by women. This requirement is not just a formality but an opportunity to achieve better results, as research shows that diversity in leadership contributes to innovation, productivity, and economic growth.

According to the European Institute for Gender Equality, Croatia, with a current index of 59.7, remains far from the top of the EU rankings. However, initiatives like this can significantly contribute to progress. Increasing female representation in executive structures is not only a matter of social justice but also of economic prosperity—studies indicate that leadership diversity can boost GDP by 6 to 9%.
